Jets Superbowl Bound?

by Allen Hall

We are just a few days away from the biggest New York Jets game in the past 12 years. Who would have thought a week 16 win over the Colts could have such an impact? Just picture the irony of this situation that a team that the Colts get into the playoffs be the one that eliminates them. Former divisional rivals clash in just the third time in the playoffs ever. In one corner weighing in with a mighty record of 15 wins and just 2 losses the Indianapolis Colts. And to my right weighing in with a record of 11 wins and 7 loses the New York Jets.

The scene, January 4th, 2003 Giant stadium. After an improbable turnout sparked by a young, accurate quarterback Chad Pennington the New York Jets trounced the Colts 41-0. That New York Jets team was left for dead at 2-5. That lead to the now famous Herm Edwards speech, "Hello you play to win the game." That spark lead to a 7-2 stretch to end the season 9-7 and AFC East Champions.

Flash forward now to Sunday, January 24th 2010 the scene, Lucas Oil Stadium. The head coach of the New York Jets with a championship pedigree in Rex Ryan. His father of course is the famed defensive coordinator of 85 Bears championship team. Rex like his father has the number one ranked defense in points per game, and yards per game.

Much like the 2002-2003 Jets team this is lead by a hotshot young quarterback with the "it" factor in Mark Sanchez. Like the 2002 Jets team its fed of its running game and outstanding offensive line play. Instead of Curtis Martin and Lamont Jordan carrying the rock we have Thomas Jones and rookie Shonn Greene. Greene has really come alive in the last few weeks averaging over 120 yards a game. Shonn last week against the Chargers toted the rock 23 times for 128 yards and 1td. In the 4th quarter against San Diego when the jets needed a play the most he delivered. Shonn took the handoff ran over Charger Safety Eric Weddle on his way to a New York Jet post season record 53 yard touchdown run.

Do the Jets deserve to be in the playoffs? Yes based on the way they have been playing the past 8 weeks winners of 7. Hate the jets or not when you are playing ball well you the ball tends to fall your way. Did the 1992 New York Giants beat the Bills in the Super Bowl or did the Bills just not win it based on the kick of Scott Norwood being wide.

Give the Colts there credit they are the #1 seed in the AFC for a reason. They have a Hall of Famer in the making at quarterback in Peyton Manning. A completely underrated offensive line that gives Peyton Manning all day to throw. Look at his receiving core other then Reggie Wayne or Dallas Clark whoever heard of Pierre Garson or Austin Collie? Raise your hand if you did because I hadn't. The Colts are starting two incredible pass rushers in Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. If there is a downside to the Colts defense it's in the secondary. They start two rookie cornerbacks in Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey. Missing from the secondary is former Defensive Player of the Year in Bob Sanders. Sanders, when healthy, is the playmaking, emotional leader of the defense. He is everything you want in a team leader but always hurt. Taking his spot at safety is Antoine Bethea.

The Colts defense is the complete outside of what the Jets Defense is. The Colts are a read and react defense with speed everywhere. The Jets defense is an attacking style defense who bring the pain to the offense. As Rex Ryan said in his opening press conference, " Read-and-react defense is not for us, we're gonna attack, to and through the whistle. If you take a swipe at one of our guys we are going to take a swipe at two of yours."

Prediction: Jets defense force a couple of turnovers but this seasons wild ride ends in Indy. Colts 24-Jets 10
